Mapless 1, 2 and 3.

I made these sketches while watching/listening to a documentary/interview about/with William Gibson. > No Maps For These Territories. I remember after reading Burning Chrome in the early eighties and trying to convince friends to read it. Most people couldn't get into it-couldn't dig the future slang. After that I didn't bother but kept on reading his books. "Cyberspace? What's that?" Now we're all jacked in and the term seems almost old fashioned.

Tall Tales

I produced this Paul Bunyan art for Benchmark Education. I tried to evoke a slightly retro cartoon style under a tight deadline and budget. Davy Crockett was the subject of the first tall tales script I was given. The editors liked my pencil sketches but decided not to go with that script and switched me to Paul Bunyan. I finished off the top Davy Crockett sketch in color and in a style I prefer and with the luxury of more time. I may do another for use in my portfolio.

Fwape

Some paintings can be best described as a learning experience and that's the case with this one. My original, more interesting, sketch (below left) was done in gouache on watercolor paper and was very spontaneous and textural. This one, done in acrylic, has none of that. Also I failed to get the colors and contrast right (some of that is due to scanning). Onward.

Sketchbook Page Fifty

C. Lawrence Howell sings " Blue Moon" in Wolfman the (failed) Musical. Dogged by criticism for his performance in this play, Howell retired from acting to a splendid no-kill shelter and married a fetching young bitch named Bitsy.
